Springfield Police Department Joins Aggressive Driving Crackdown

Nine other Delaware County police departments will partake in the statewide enforcement, PennDOT announced.

SPRINGFIELD, PA – Springfield Township Police will be joining nine other Delaware County police departments, and nearly 60 in the greater Philadelphia area, in a statewide crackdown on aggressive driving, according to PennDOT.

The statewide initiative beings Thursday, July 6 and ends Aug. 26.

Fifty-eight municipalities in Delaware, Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties will be targeting motorists who show aggressive driving behaviors including running red lights, speeding, distracted driving, violating Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law, tailgating, and more, PennDOT said.

Since the project was launched in 2006, nearly 600 roadways have been targeted with additional enforcement and education, PennDOT said.

The enforcement is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to PennDOT data, there were 1,475 crashes and 20 fatalities in 2016 in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties in which aggressive-driving was a factor.

PennDOT says if you encounter an aggressive driver, you should:

  • Get out of their way and don't challenge them;
  • stay relaxed, avoid eye contact and ignore rude gestures;
  • and don't block the passing lane if you are driving slower than most of the traffic.
