Reflections on India: Childhood Lost and Found

The ABLE program of Delaware Valley Friends School made a service trip to India during Spring Break 2014.

The group worked in conjunction with the non-profit “Access to Education,” founded in 2008 by DVFS senior Thomas Hircock. Access to Education raises funds to purchase bicycles for children (mostly girls) in rural Rajasthan and Bihar who are classified as Untouchables in their culture. They may be orphans and/or refugees from slavery or work camps. These bicycles make it possible for the children to attend school, which can be located more than 20 miles from their homes. To date, “Access to Education” has raised money for more than 400 bicycles. The bicycles are built in India and are able to withstand the forest terrain. Each bike comes with a repair kit.

On Thursday, May 8, the ABLE India group presented a slideshow and shared their personal reflections on the experience.

At the end of their presentation, the DVFS community was posed with the query/reflection: "Have you ever had your right to education, bread (food), play (freedom), or love taken away?"

Teacher/chaperone Elizabeth Kriynovich has shared an overview of the trip, and you can see her article, the slideshow, and some participant reflections on the website.
