Dog Show At Tinicum Park

Bucks County Kennel Club holds its 72nd annual dog show on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Tinicum Park in Erwinna, PA. More than 2,400 dogs will compete in conformation, obedience, and rally classes. Admission for the public is $5 per car. Most of the AKC recognized breeds are represented.

Last year the largest entry was in mastiffs, where more than 115 turned out. Other large entries were in Great Danes, Australian Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, and Collies. Golden and Labrador retrievers attract large entries as do Irish Setters, Afghan hounds, Salukis, Siberian Huskies, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and German Shepherds. This year all of these breeds plus many others are holding either a specialty or a supported entry at the show.

Bucks County KC is one of the largest one-day outdoor shows in the nation and is famous for its spectacularly beautiful site, Tinicum Park, along the Delaware River. The Bucks County SPCA supports the show through trophies for Junior showmanship and obedience. 

Judging in 22 rings begins at 8:30 am and continues throughout the day. Group judging, where the individual breed winners compete, begins at 3 pm. The best in show winner will be selected around 6 pm by Mrs. Keke Kahn of Sarasota FL.

This show offers a splendid opportunity to view many breeds and to talk to breeders. The catalogue lists all the participants. For those curious about dog shows, the club offers a dog show tour; the time will be posted at the show. There will be concessions selling everything one might want for the family dog and items for the breed lover. The American Kennel Club will have booth with lots of informational material about dogs and dog shows.

As breeds are judged, those who have been eliminated, leave. To see the most dogs, come early in the morning. A judging schedule will be posted on the club’s website a week prior to the show at www.buckscountykennelclub.org .

Kids will be fascinated by the dogs and will want to pet them. Please ask the owner of the dog whether that’s ok. People often ask whether they can bring their own dog. That is not recommended as the animal may get hot if the weather is warm; it may also want to play with the many dogs there and those dogs are strangers. It’s best to leave the family dog at home where it is more comfortable.
