On behalf of the Board of Commissioners of Upper Moreland Township, David Dodies is pleased to announce the appointment of S. Michael Murphy as the new Chief of Police of the Upper Moreland Township Police Department.
Chief Murphy, who will begin his service with Upper Moreland Township on April 29, 2013, brings a wealth of experience to the position. Chief Murphy began his career with the Upper Dublin Township Police Department in 1979. During his twenty-six year tenure with the Upper Dublin Police Department Chief Murphy gained a wealth of experience in his service as Sergeant, Acting Patrol Commander, Commander, Deputy Chief of Police Operations and finally Deputy Chief.

In 2005, Chief Murphy left Upper Dublin when he accepted the position of Chief of Police for Warminster Township Police Department. Under Chief Murphy’s guidance the Warminster Police Department attained Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation in July 2008 and re-accreditation in May 2011 making them a benchmark agency within the Southeastern Pennsylvania region in the development of policies, procedures and industry leading standards of excellence.

Chief Murphy received a Masters of Public Safety/Homeland Security and Magna Cum Laude Honors while earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from St. Joseph’s University. In addition to the numerous ongoing educational and advancement training he attends, Chief Murphy has his Act 120 Certification and attended the FBI, National Academy.
Chief Murphy is an active member of the FBI National Academy Associates, International Chiefs of Police Association, Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, Police Chiefs Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley Association of Professional Police Officials. He lives in Glenside with his wife Marian. It is with great pleasure we welcome him to Upper Moreland Township.
