Upper Moreland High School "Music in Motion"

UPPER MORELAND HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST MARCHING BAND COMPETITION, WELCOMES ALUMNI FOR SPECIAL BAND PERFORMANCE

For the 45th year, Upper Moreland High School will host its annual marching band competition, “Music in Motion”, Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.  Admission is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and seniors.  Proceeds from the evening benefit the Upper Moreland Music Patrons, a parent-led group that supports extracurricular music programs in the school district.

“Music in Motion is an awesome display of the talent here in our own backyard,” says Upper Moreland High School band director Glenn Cowen, in his first year with the district.  “Our students, and those from the visiting schools, work incredibly hard to incorporate music and movement into a field production that entertains the audience and wows the judges.”  The 2012 Upper Moreland High School Marching Unit production is entitled “Kaleidoscope” and transports its 77 musicians and 13 color guard members into an on-field version of the colorful toy.

This year’s Music in Motion includes a performance by the Upper Moreland Alumni Band, a group that performs once every five years.  All Upper Moreland alumni who participated in the district’s music programs while they were students are invited to a one-time rehearsal the morning of Music in Motion. Alumni can register to participate at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13 and for more information can contact Carolyn Kushner at Carolynkushner@yahoo.com or at 215-896-9132.  The alumni band performs last, immediately following the performance by the current Upper Moreland High School Marching Unit.

“An alumni band performance is a big deal,” says Music Patrons president Tom Winterberg.  “It’s a chance for former Upper Moreland music students to revisit the musical experiences they treasure from their time in our school district, and to reconnect with old friends and sometimes former teachers.”

Music in Motion is one stop on the Cavalcade of Bands competition circuit.  High school marching bands associated with Cavalcade enter weekly competitions at area high schools and are judged by professionals for their musical and visual performance, as well as the performances by the bands’ guard and percussion units.  Winners are announced at each competition and rankings are created throughout the season, which ends in November at the Cavalcade of Bands Championships on Sunday, November 11 in Hershey, PA.

The Upper Moreland Music Patrons is a non-profit, parent-led, volunteer organization, whose members include community supporters and parents of students involved in the Upper Moreland School District’s many music programs.  Through various fundraising efforts the organization raises money to provide financial support to extracurricular music programs throughout the Upper Moreland School District for expenses not included in the school district’s budget.
