Fireplace Embers Spark Blaze on Charles Street

Fire officials warn against the dangers of not properly disposing the ashes from your fireplace.

Emergency crews responded to a fire Thursday morning on Charles Street.

Southampton Fire Company Chief Tom Brown said embers from a fireplace placed in a plastic can ignited a fire just after 7 a.m. this morning.

Brown said the fire was contained to the exterior of the home and no one was injured in the blaze. While he could not give the official time, he said the blaze was knocked down in a short period of time.

"We recommend that you keep ashes from your fireplace in a metal container, and then the store that container away from your home," said Brown. "Don't store ashes in plastic, don't keep them in your garage—get them outside and away from the exterior of your home."

Members of the Southampton Fire Company, Warminster Fire Department, Willow Grove Fire Company and Feasterville Fire Co. responded to the incident.
