Allegheny County Elections

Allegheny County voters in tomorrow's primary election will choose candidates who will vie in the November general election to replace outgoing Chief Executive Dan Onorato.

A Democrat from the North Side, Onorato opted not to seek a third term after losing the Pennsylvania governor's race last year to former state Attorney General Tom Corbett, a Republican from Shaler.

Also in the May 17 primary, voters will choose the candidates who will appear on the November ballot in the races for County Controller, District Attorney, County Treasurer and County Council.

Republican candidates include:

• D. Raja, a Mt. Lebanon commissioner and co-founder of technology company CEI, of Mt. Lebanon
• Chuck McCullough, a former county council member and attorney, of Upper St. Clair. He is awaiting trial on charges that he used an elderly woman's money to make contributions without authorization. He has denied the charges.

Democrat candidates include:

• Rich Fitzgerald, a county council member, former county council president and founder of a water-treatment equipment and services company, of Squirrel Hill
• Mark Patrick Flaherty, the county controller and a tax and investment attorney, of Mt. Lebanon

Pittsburgh Tea Party co-founder Patti Weaver, who also was running as a Republican, withdrew her candidacy on March 23.

Republican candidates include:

• Robert Howard, a former North Allegheny school director, of Marshall Township

Democrat candidates include:

• George Matta, director of business development and community relations for the Rivers Casino on the North Side, a former Duquesne mayor and former clerk of Allegheny County Common Pleas Court, of White Oak
• Valerie McDonald Roberts, a chemist, former member of Pittsburgh Board of Education and Pittsburgh City Council, former Allegheny County recorder of deeds and former manager of the county real estate department, of Churchill
• Chelsa Wagner, a business analyst and attorney, the state representative for the 22nd District in the South Hills, of Brookline

Republican candidates include:

• None

Democrat candidates include:

• Incumbent Stephen A. Zappala Jr., an attorney, of Fox Chapel

Republican candidates include:

• C. Edward Pfeifer, of Oakland

Democrat candidates include:

• Incumbent John K. Weinstein, of Kennedy

Republican candidates include:

• Heather Heidelbaugh, an attorney who has been active in Republican activities, of Mt. Lebanon
• Edward J. Kress, an attorney, of Shaler

Democrat candidates include

• John P. DeFazio, a United Steelworkers of America official and Allegheny County Labor Council leader, a county council member and former professional wrestler, of Shaler

COUNTY COUNCIL DISTRICT 2

The district includes Bell Acres, Bradford Woods, Franklin Park, Hampton, Marshall, McCandless, Ohio Township, Pine, Richland, Sewickley Heights, Sewickley Hills and West Deer.

Republican candidates include:

• Incumbent Jan Rea, of McCandless, who has been a member of council since 2000.

Democrat candidates include:

• None

Republican candidates include:

• Alexander P. Bicket, an attorney and former teacher at Fox Chapel High School, of Mt. Lebanon
• Eleanor Bush, an attorney and advocate for children and families in foster care, of Squirrel Hill
• Daniel J. Konieczka Jr., an attorney and former prosecutor as a deputy district attorney, of Shaler
• Michael Marmo, a Common Pleas Court judge in the family division, a law professor, and a former attorney and special master for the county Board of Viewers, of Emsworth
• Jennifer Satler, an attorney, law professor and county assistant public defender, of the North Side

Democrat candidates include:

• Alexander P. Bicket, an attorney and former teacher at Fox Chapel High School, of Mt. Lebanon
• Eleanor Bush, an attorney and advocate for children and families in foster care, of Squirrel Hill
• Leah Williams Duncan, an attorney and hearing officer in the family division of Common Pleas Court, of Brighton Heights
• Daniel J. Konieczka Jr., an attorney and former prosecutor as a deputy district attorney, of Shaler
• Michael Marmo, a Common Pleas judge in the family division, a law professor, and a former attorney and special master for the county board of viewers, of Emsworth
• Carmen L. Robinson, an attorney and former Pittsburgh police officer and detective, of the Hill District
• Jennifer Satler, an attorney, law professor and county assistant public defender, of the North Side
