The First Lady's Noble War on Obesity

Paving the Way to a Brighter Future - Why Not Eliminate Junk Foods from the Diets of Food Stamp Recipients?

I continue to admire First Lady Michelle Obama’s efforts to stem obesity, particularly that which occurs in children, as this is a crisis which threatens to end American civilization as we have known it.

I would be interested to know whether the First Lady has offered an opinion to the president on realignment of the burgeoning food stamp program, which allows recipients to purchase various foods that constitute a harmful, junk diet.

What sense does it make for taxpayer dollars to be used to subsidize a style of food consumption which leads to illness and disease, subjecting taxpayers to a double whammy when the benefit recipient requires expensive medical care?

I suspect that there are few on the food stamp rolls that are experts in nutrition.  These individuals should be aided and guided in what they select to drink and eat when taxpayers are footing the bill.

The Women with Infants and Children Program (WIC) allows only certain foods to be purchased, and is aligned with sensible dietary guidelines.  WIC could be an excellent starting point for redesign of the Food Stamp Program.

Americans have the ability to purchase harmful foods with their own money.  They should not have the right to do so with taxpayer money.  To allow junk foods to be purchased with food stamps is counterproductive and counterintuitive.
