The Speech I Hope President Obama Does Not Deliver

Will the President Take a Tip from Cyprus as it Struggles to Emerge from its Fiscal Morass?

Friends:  All of you are aware of the struggle in which our nation is embroiled in order to maintain our entitlement programs and to reduce a deficit that is now close to an unfathomable $17 trillion.

Thanks to my friends in Cyprus, I now have a great idea to address our fiscal woes!  I am addressing you today to announce that I have enacted by Executive Order a 10% tax on bank account deposits and stock investments.  I recognize that this maneuver is something new for the United States, but I encourage no one to panic.  I will only steal...er…seize assets from those that can afford to fork them over, those with $100,000 or more in their accounts, the folks who do not need the money.

To those who would express concern that I am seeking to punish responsible savers in order to redistribute your wealth, I say, prefaced by my trademark speech tics, Look, you know; you are correct, but what choice did I have?  How else can we fund food stamp benefits for a record one in seven Americans and add millions to the burgeoning Medicaid rolls?  Cadillac quality cradle to grave care is not cheap, my friends!

I hope that those who are losing their hard-earned savings will not be angry with me when they consider the fact that they are making it easier for their neighbors to live the good life they deserve simply by virtue of being citizens of this rich and generous country.  Thank you and God bless the redistributionist United States of America!”

One recognizes anew what a calamity our Iraqi occupation has been in noting that we now must beg that nation's leadership not to allow Iran to use its airspace to send weapons to the ruthless dictatorship in Syria , which continues to slaughter innocent civilians, including children.

By the time the toll of the Iraq debacle can be finalized, if ever, we will have squandered an estimated $2 to $3 trillion, lost about 4500 of our valiant soldiers, and endured the injury of tens of thousands more.  Additionally, the estimated death toll of Iraqi civilians is 100,000 plus an incalculable number of injuries sustained by others.   Furthermore, the loss of prestige and respect for the United States can never be quantified or underestimated.

Afghanistan was the war that we needed to fight, not Iraq.

There should be no question in the minds of the American people that Iraq will be under the influence of Iran, the big winner to emerge from the occupation, and that all we sacrificed will be quickly forgotten.

It would have been difficult to imagine the Iraqi occupation developing into more of a mistake than it has been throughout and which it shall always remain.

Having apparently learned nothing from the debacle he fomented with his General Assembly Year of the Bible resolution, State Representative Rick Saccone (R-Elizabeth) has gotten the vast majority of his colleagues to repeat the mistake they made in stepping into the Year of the Bible controversy.

By a vote of 160-35, the State House approved a resolution approving a "National Fast Day", i. e., a National Day of Prayer.

Representative Saccone's rationale for  the measure is no doubt chilling to those that do not share his religious views and fervor, the following from his 7 January 2013 Memorandum to all House members:
