All About Kicknetting
WHAT Kicknetting is a water quality monitoring activity. We use a small mesh screen to capture macroinvertebrates from the stream. Then we identify and count the critters we have netted. The macroinvertebrates, affectionately referred to as “creek critters”, are predominantly the pre-adult, aquatic life phase of flying insects, though some are strictly aquatic.
WHY Biologists have studied macro-invertebrates and determined that some are more sensitive to water pollution than others. We identify the macroinvertebrates that we net and categorize them accordingly: sensitive, somewhat sensitive, and tolerant. The number and type of macroinvertebrates netted is a good indicator of water quality.
