2 More Penn State Frats In Hot Water Over Alcohol Violations

One of the frats that lost its recognition held a "Fifth and a Friend" event to specifically encourage drinking, the university said.

Two Penn State fraternities have had their recognition immediately revoked over alcohol violations, the university has announced.

Delta Upsilon has been disciplined for organizing socials involving alcohol and underage drinking, twice in a three-week period, the university said. The fraternity also held an event called “Fifth and a Friend,” specifically designed to encourage alcohol consumption, the university said in a statement. Its recognition has been revoked until the end of the 2018 spring semester.

Pi Lambda Phi has been disciplined for making alcohol available to guests on three separate occasions during social events. It also violated the capacity of the fraternity house and the expectations for dry social functions, the university said in an announcement. Pi Lambda Phi has had its recognition revoked until the end of spring semester 2019.

The news comes as involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault charges have been re-filed against 11 Beta Theta Pi brothers in connection with the alleged hazing death of a 19-year-old Penn State sophomore last February. The Centre County District Attorney announced Friday she was refiling the charges after a judge dismissed them in August.

Loss or suspension of recognition means that a fraternity cannot participate in any Greek-life activities and are prohibited from participating in any university function as a group, including Homecoming and THON.

"For all intents and purposes, a fraternity does not exist in the Penn State community when it loses recognition," the university said.

Penn State said it is taking the situation of alcohol and hazing on campus seriously.

“The point of everything we are doing in this domain is to establish a safe, viable, and successful Greek system that can be sustained for many years to come. The misbehavior of these chapters demonstrates very little regard for the trouble alcohol can bring. I am disappointed by this outcome, but effective accountability must be achieved," said Damon Sims, vice president for Student Affairs.
