WARMINSTER, PA —The Hartsville Fire Co. plans to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a flag memorial and a memorial service Sunday.

Residents are invited “stop, reflect and remember” with the York Road fire station open from "sun-up to sundown" to view the flag memorial, a display of 403 American flags on the front lawn, according to the fire company's website.

The flags represent the 343 New York City firefighters, 37 New York Port Authority officers and the 23 New York police officers who died in the 9/11 attacks.

Two additional flags will represent volunteer firefighters John Kulick and Tristan Smith, who were killed in action in Iraq.

"Although emergency responders are foremost in our thoughts and prayers, we wish to remember everyone who lost their lives in New York City, Washington, DC and in Shanksville on Sept. 11," fire officials said.

A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m.

It will include a reading of the names of the fallen firefighters and police officers. The public is invited and encouraged to assist with reading the names and retrieving the flags.

Since 2003, the Hartsville Fire Co. has held a 9/11 flag memorial. When the company heard the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey was planning on giving away steel from the World Trade Center, the fire company applied for a piece to establish a permanent memorial at the station.
