WARMINSTER, PA —The phone ringing at Rilling's Bucks County Bakery doesn't get answered.

There's only a recorded message left by the owners this Friday morning, the day before the bakery in the Davisville Shopping Center at 868 E. Street Rd. is closing its doors for good.

After 88 years, this third-generation family of master bakers since 1936 is hanging up their aprons and heading off into the sunset toward retirement.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce our closure," the message Patch heard Friday states. "We are immensely grateful. We bid farewell to our beloved bakery. We wish you all the sweetness and joy."

Early in February, Rilling's owners Michael, Diane, and the Rilling's family of employees said in its statement that the decision was not made lightly, but that it was time to begin a new chapter.

Bakery owners said they wanted to retire and pursue other interests. Owners said, though, that they would leave the door open to future possibilities and maybe return in a different form someday.

The most recent Rilling's Facebook post on Tuesday that the bakery would no longer be accepting orders. Other than the recorded message, there has not been a swansong post as of yet.

Longtime customers are already mourning the bakery's loss, knowing that they won't be salivating over the butter cookies and cake and chocolate chip pound cake as one person mentioned on Facebook.

"You are all rock stars in my book. I will so miss Rilling’s but wish you all the best success in the future! Thanks for everything!" another customer said.

"Congratulations Folks, on all your faithful years of service to all of the communities you served," another customer said. "Best cream donuts and butter cake around. Enjoy your so richly deserved retirement."
