Philadelphia Eagles Can't Flub Super Bowl Shot: Philly Sports Chatter

The Philadelphia Eagles, at 14-3, came too far this season to just earn a participation trophy for getting to the NFC Championship Game.

WARMINSTER, PA —This season cannot end with a participation trophy.

It’s the Super Bowl or Bust.

Nothing else matters. And anything short of that means that this season for the Philadelphia Eagles was really all for naught.

You can't go 14-3 in the regular season and dominate other NFL teams for most of the year with the end goal of getting to the NFC Championship Game.

While any team would bask in that accomplishment, it's a participation trophy for these Birds.

Super Bowl or Bust.

Top seeds don’t always make it to the Super Bowl. But the AFC's top seed, the Kansas City Chiefs, is also playing in the championship game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

So the Eagles need to follow a successful script when they face the San Francisco 49ers at the Linc Sunday.

The 2023 Philadelphia Eagles need to act like the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles.

Sure, no one expected that team to get to the Super Bowl, especially after Quarterback Carson Wentz went down with a season-ending injury.

Those Eagles could have crumbled against the Minnesota Vikings. But we all know how that game went.

The Eagles came out full throttle from their first snap. Coach Doug Pederson was aggressive in his play calling and fired away at the Vikings. With Nick Foles at the helm, the team had its pedal on the metal the entire game.

That's what Coach Nick Sirianni needs to do with quarterback Jalen Hurts Sunday.

Take the kickoff if the coin toss goes in the Birds' favor and ram that football right down the 49ers' throats.

We all know how some of these championship games have fared at times when the Eagles have played at home. Not very good.

I still get shivers thinking about how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who didn’t like playing in cold temperatures, beat the Birds to go to the Super Bowl. That should have been the Eagles playing in the big game.

But when you think about it, the Birds have won two straight NFC Championship Games at home.

There was Saint Nick and company against the Vikings.

But let's not forget when Donovan McNabb and Coach Andy Reid got the monkey off their back by beating the Atlanta Falcons before losing to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

That reminds me of another streak.

The Birds won the last time they played in the Super Bowl. They need to do it again this year.
