Philadelphia Eagles QB Hurts Won’t Win MVP: Philly Sports Chatter

Jalen Hurts is the NFL MVP for leading the Philadelphia Eagles to the league's best record. The award will probably go to Patrick Mahomes.

PHILADELPHIA, PA —Jalen Hurts is the NFL MVP. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback should win the award. But he probably won’t. Maybe one day, just not this year.

Hurts has grown by leaps and bounds and he leads the team with the best record in the league.

Listen to sports radio in Philadelphia, though, and all the talk focuses on the age-old question of the chicken and the egg. In this case the Bird vs. the Eagles.

Is it Hurts that’s driving the team or is it the team that’s driving Hurts?

That’s the outside looking in at the Eagles. But we all know better.

Yes, General Manager Howie Roseman has plugged every hole, fixed every leak and armed Hurts at every position with firepower wherever and whenever he turns.

But could Carson Wentz win with this team? Probably not.

Hurts lingered in the shadow of Wentz and even after an impressive run last year leading the Eagles to the playoffs, he still wasn’t given the credit.

Even going into this year there were doubts about his abilities and whether he could carry a team.

Well, anyone who has watched any game knows that Hurts is the driving force.

It’s his team. And he's still playing on his rookie contract. If this keeps up, the Eagles are going to have to dig deep into their pockets to pay him.

He’s taken the lead and shown the poise and the maturity of a player who is all business and all matter of fact. His demeanor never changes. This is a player who is assured and confident. This is a player the team rallies around. And this is a player who will put the team on his back and get the job done himself if need be.

But around the league, Hurts still has doubters.

Nobody is putting Hurts in the same conversation as Joe Burrow, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Hebert, Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes. At least not yet anyway. It's like no one truly believes that it's Hurts who is pushing this team to greater heights.

And that’s the issue.

That’s why Mahomes, the phenomenal quarterback for Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs, will probably win the award.

He’s the NFL’s darling and he does things each game that blows the mind. Hurts is nowhere near the talent Mahomes displays on the field. But he's getting there.

Remember, Hurts is a second-year starter and he’s having an amazing season. But these Eagles are a solid team across the board.

So Hurts might not win the NFL MVP award this year. But let's not get all upset about that.

Hurts might be able to win more important hardware: The Lombardi Trophy.
