Red Light Cameras Coming To Warminster

Warminster Township will add two red light cameras at key Street Road intersections where there have been fatal accidents.

WARMINSTER TOWNSHIP, PA — Red light cameras are coming to the township.

The Warminster Township Board of Supervisors recently approved an ARLE ordinance for red light cameras at two major intersections: Street Road at Jacksonville Road and another one at Street Road and York Road.

Police Chief James Donnelly III provided details about the red light cameras to supervisors at the board's March 5 meeting.

Donnelly said red light cameras have been on his desk since 2016.

Abington Township was the first to institute red light cameras before being joined by Warrington and Bensalem townships.

The police chief said that the cameras are the "way of the future" and that he hopes to add crime and speed cameras one day too.

The chief said the township would have a seven-year contract for the cameras, which cost $4,000 for each one.

Donnelly said there won't be fines for a short time period. Once fines go into place, the penalty will be $100.

He said the township does not receive any money from the program.

The police chief said the two intersections were chosen due to a few fatal accidents over the past few years, and that PennDOT supports the program since Street Road is a state-owned road.

"I think it's fantastic," Supervisors Chairman Kenneth Hayes said. "Those are busy intersections. There are a lot of accidents."
