10 Tips For Buying Outdoor Furniture That Lasts

Wondering if your outdoor furniture will stand up to the elements this summer? Many of our customers wonder the same thing, so we've compiled this list of 10 tips for buying quality outdoor furniture. This summer, make sure the best seat at your house is outside.

1. No matter the amount of outdoor space you have, seat height is one dimension that shouldn't be overlooked. Lower chairs and chaises are harder (and more awkward) for your guests to rise from.

2. Get fast drying cushions. Here's what to ask your sales associate:
- Is this cushion made from an open-cell structure foam (like Urecel) that allows water to drain rapidly and fresh air to circulate freely and continuously?
-Does it have a mesh lining so water can escape after a rain?
-Does it have anti-microbial technology to prevent mold?
3. Avoid pancake cushions – they are uncomfortable and show their wear & tear. Award bonus points to cushions with a memory foam crown, which gives a plush finish and makes your cushions look newer longer.

4. Speaking of rain, keep in mind that steel and wrought iron rust. Aluminum does not. If you are buying wrought iron furniture, make sure it’s powder-coated, properly maintained, and that any scratches are immediately touched up.

5. And, if you are buying wicker or all-weather synthetic wicker, make sure the frames use only rust-proof materials, like aluminum.

6. Similarly, if you are buying natural wood furniture, look for stainless steel screws which won’t rust like steel screws will.

7. Keep in mind that not all aluminum components are created equal. Aluminum can be light-weight or sturdy depending upon construction. Studio 882's Hollywood Sofa has a sturdy aluminum frame beneath the all-weather synthetic wicker. It was made so a party full of people could sit on the wicker arms & back.

8. Take the “thump test.” Good quality, heavy wall aluminum frames will have a “thud” sound when thumped. Thin wall aluminum frames will have a “tink” sound when thumped.

9. If you are using your furniture around a pool or at the shore, make sure it uses materials made for chlorine and salt water exposure. Like our Batyline Mesh used in the North Collection.

10. Finally, check to make sure your chair & table legs have rubber or plastic feet that won’t scratch your deck or patio.

At Studio 882, we're always available to answer your questions about quality construction. Visit our showroom to take the "thump test" on our new line of outdoor furniture, or explore the line on our web site.
