Get ready to shake up storytime! Megan Dowd Lambert, a senior lecturer in children’s literature at Simmons College, will discuss an exciting, interactive alternative to the traditional read aloud. By inviting children to engage with a picture book’s art and design, Lambert’s Whole Book Approach supports careful observation, listening, and critical and creative thinking. Lambert will share practical techniques for adding depth to storytime from her recently-published book, Reading Picture Books with Children: How to Shake Up Storytime and Get Kids Talking About What They See. Of interest to parents, teachers, librarians, and anyone who enjoys reading with young children, this program will include a model storytime, lecture, Q&A, and book-signing.
The museum will open at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation at 6 p.m. and a book signing and reception to follow. Lambert's books will be available for purchase in the museum shop.
Megan Dowd Lambert developed the Whole Book Approach in association with the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, where she worked for nearly a decade leading storytimes and training others in her methods. She's served on the Geisel, Caldecott, and Boston Globe Horn Book Award committees and writes and reviews for The Horn Book and Kirkus Reviews. Her debut picture book, A Crow of His Own, illustrated by David Hyde Costello, received a 2016 Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Honor, and Real Sisters Pretend, illustrated by Nicole Tadgell, came out in 2016.
