These are some of the courageous women human rights activists imprisoned in countries around the world for peacefully but persistently speaking their mind. During its Write for Rights campaign, Amnesty International USA is championing them and eight other brave women. During the campaign everyday activists just like you will be sending them messages of hope and addressing letters to government officials in their countries demanding their release.
These letters get results! One such success story is Cambodian housing rights activist Yorm Bopha, imprisoned for defending her community’s rights in Phnom Penh, where thousands of people had been forcibly evicted. She is now free because activists flooded her government’s offices with thousands of petitions on her behalf.
