Look Back: A Spanish cannon seized from Cuba donated in 1899 (timesleader.com) — Wilkes-Barre once proudly displayed a Spanish cannon captured during the Spanish-American War, parading it through downtown and firing it from the River Common near Fort Durkee. Donated by the governor after lobbying from local groups, the cannon moved between City Hall, Memorial Hall, and the Historical Society before vanishing from public view, leaving residents with a lingering historical mystery.
   

2. Union: water company trying to intimidate from sharing rate hike history (citizensvoice.com) — Wilkes-Barre officials are weighing a possible sale of the city's sewer assets while a national water company and a major utility union clash over warnings about past rate hikes. Union leaders say American Water is trying to silence their outreach to Wilkes-Barre and other towns, while city council and the mayor insist they'll scrutinize all information before deciding on any sale.
   

3. Wilkes-Barre Area, LCCC celebrate creation of new college-ready scholarship (citizensvoice.com) — Wilkes-Barre Area students now have access to a new LCCC College Ready scholarship that can cover tuition and fees as they continue from high school into college. The Angeline & Conrad Kotlowski College-Ready Scholarship Endowment honors a longtime Wilkes-Barre family's community service and is expected to help generations of local students earn college credits and pursue degrees without overwhelming financial pressure.
   

4. October Consumer Financial Protection Events to Help Save Money, Invest Wisely, Recognize Scams, and Avoid Identity Theft (pennwatch.org) — Wilkes-Barre seniors can attend an AI scam-awareness session at the Charles T. Adams Active Adult Center on Oct. 9, learning how to spot and avoid high-tech fraud. The state banking department is rolling out similar free events statewide, all aimed at protecting savings, preventing identity theft, and helping residents manage their money more confidently in retirement.
   

5. Community raises funds for deputies fighting cancer (2822news.com) — Wilkes-Barre residents are rallying behind two Luzerne County sheriff's deputies battling serious cancers, with local law enforcement and city leaders joining the effort. You can buy support ribbons at the Luzerne County Courthouse or purchase themed merchandise, with every dollar going directly to the deputies' families. Donations for a future basket raffle are also being accepted through October 30.
