YARDLEY, PA — The Borough Council welcomed two new members as both were sworn into office before its Tuesday night meeting.

Mayor Chris Harding gave the oath to Don Carlson and David Appelbaum to join the seven-member board. They replaced David Bria and Chris Campellone, who resigned because both were moving out of town.

"We're all volunteers to who spend long nights for service to the community," the mayor said before swearing in the two right before the meeting's start.

Their addition comes at a time when the borough council membership is being challenged.

A question will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot asking residents to reduce the council from seven to five members. The drive was started by resident Earl Markey, who believes the council is too big for the borough's population.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity and look forward to it," said Carlson, who also had to resign his seat on the planning board. His resignation was accepted by council.

Appelbaum kidded that Tuesday night would probably be "the last time I wear a suit."

"I thought it was time to step up and hit the ground running," he said. "I'm excited."

Appelbaum will serve on the council's community outreach committee, parks and recreation and Yardley Business Association.

Carlson was appointed to handle general government, the zoning hearing board and the sewer commission.
