YARDLEY BOROUGH, PA — As the borough's new mayor, Caroline Thompson oversees the Yardley Borough Police Department.

After Thompson officially became mayor after taking the oath of office last month, she was approached by Police Chief William J. Golden III about honoring some police officers for their heroics in helping to bungle a home burglary and apprehend two suspects.

"When Chief Golden reached out and asked, 'What do you think of honoring great policing achievements as they happen as opposed to waiting for an annual ceremony?' it was an immediate yes," Thompson recently told Patch.

And then it happened.

At the Yardley Borough Council's Jan. 20 meeting, four of "Yardley's Finest" were awarded the Yardley Borough Police Department Unit Commendation Award for their work in the burglary in early December.

The police department honored Police Officers Charles M. Gillock, Joseph D. Martin, William Beaudet, and Alex P. Bires.

Thompson said the police officer recognition served two purposes: To reward good policing with public commendations and to let the public know that the burglary was closed out by "Yardley's finest."
