YARDLEY, PA —He's the face you've seen a thousand times at the Yardley Borough Post Office, right next to Borough Hall.

He greets you and helps you and leaves you feeling fine. This is Matt Wenda and he's retiring Friday.

Thus, borough officials have dubbed Friday as "Matt Wenda Day."

"As many of you know, Matt's last day at the Yardley post office is Friday as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement," Councilman David Appelbaum said. "Matt is a model for great customer service and is a genuinely great person. Though this is a great loss for the post office and our town, I hope you'll stop by and wish him the best, as we will never forget him."

Matt Wenda is in the hearts of borough residents and officials so much that one councilman created a GoFundMe page for donations so Wenda —who has served the community for 33 years —can better enjoy his retirement.

"If you've been to the Yardley Post Office (or the Morrisville Post Office for passport services), you probably know Matt Wenda," Councilman Jared Stump said. "Though Matt has only been with us in Yardley since 2022, his entire career has been with the USPS, and he's made a deep impact in our little Borough in a short time. As one resident put it, interacting with Matt is "always a pleasure" — which is a bit unusual to hear someone say about a trip to the post office. Matt is truly a gem. Matt always goes the extra mile to serve our community."

Stump said that when his post office box lock broke off in his hand one day, Wenda stayed after closing to personally fix it the same day so Stump's mail would be secure, and then called him to let Stump know it was done.

When Wenda told Stump he was retiring, Wenda mentioned that he needed to focus on his health and there was a lot he wanted to do.

Stump said Wenda told him he's always worked and has never taken a vacation, even though the government gives him five 5 weeks a year.

"I've never been to the Carolinas. I've never been to the Jersey Shore," Stump said Wenda told him.

In speaking with residents, Stump said he had an idea.

"I had the idea that it would be wonderful to put together a collection to 'tip' Matt for all the years of great service," Stump said. "I plan to use this money to buy him a beach chair and a few other tangible items, and then give the rest to him so he can travel and enjoy himself as a 'thank you' for all the years of service he's given to us."

Morrisville Mayor Gary Wallace said he and the entire Morrisville community wanted to thank Wenda for his many years of dedicated service at both the Morrisville and Yardley post offices.

After 33 years of serving our community with kindness and professionalism, he is heading into a well-deserved retirement," Wallace said.

Stump has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser and said that "every dollar will go directtly to Matt" other than a 3 percent processing fee. Click here for the GoFundMe page.

Cash donations can be dropped off at Borough Hall between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Stump said.
