YARDLEY, PA —The Shade Tree Commission is branching out with a new member.

The Borough Council voted Tuesday night to accept the appointment of Christine Thomas to the commission. Her term ends in 2025.

She replaces Leanne Poffenberger. The council accepted her resignation at its Sept. 20 meeting.

"Leanne really had a passion for beautifying our borough," said Councilman John McCann, who reports to council on the Shade Tree Commission. "It's sad to see that she's stepping down."

Regarding Thomas, McCann said Tuesday that "she is great" and again praised Poffenberger, which drew and "agreed" from Council President Caroline Thompson.

The council has yet to replace Don Carlson on the planning commission. Carlson resigned Sept. 20 after being named to the council to fill a vacancy.

While Carlson and David Appelbaum were sworn in as new council members on Sept. 20, it will be up to voters if it will keep its seven-member status.

A ballot question goes before voters in the Nov. 8 general election to reduce the council from seven to five members.

The Borough Council also changed its council meeting date from Tuesday, Nov. 8, to Wednesday, Nov. 9.

"We don't want people to have to choose between us and voting," she said.
