YARDLEY, PA —Councilman David Appelbaum was standing on the porch after a ground-breaking ceremony for a new business Friday morning when he heard the crash.

An SUV had just hopped a curb on Main Street and ended its destination right outside The Vault, a brewery in the downtown district.

"He was very lucky," Appelbaum said about the student driver. "It was an accident."

Yardley Police Chief Joseph Kelly III said it was an accident that caused no injuries, some minor damage to the vehicle, and no citations being issued.

The chief said the accident took place at 11:17 a.m. Friday in the area of South Main Street and Buttonwood Drive.

He said a 2006 Honda SUV operated by "a novice driver" stopped abruptly to avoid contact with a second vehicle, then accidentally accelerated abruptly.

In doing so, the driver hopped the curb in front of The Vault.

"The vehicle struck barrels, benches, and a fence in front of the business, but never contacted the building itself," the chief said.

Appelbaum said it was a close call for the business, but he does remember a few years ago that an 18-wheeler made a turn and "took out the bay window" of the Starbucks.
