Monday's blizzard obliterated Rhode Island's snowfall record.
By the time the storm broke, 37.9 inches of snow had fallen on Rhode Island, breaking a record set more than 48 years ago, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record was 28.6 inches, set on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7, 1978.
The record for a single day was also broken by the 35.5 inches that fell before midnight, the National Weather Service said. The previous record was 19 inches and set on Jan. 8, 1996.

Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport shut down operations Monday due to the storm and remained closed Tuesday morning. All flights were canceled into the afternoon.
Based on current conditions, runway operations are expected to remain suspended through tomorrow morning. The state legislature and state offices were closed Tuesday, as were schools across the state.
More than 40,000 lost power during the storm, Rhode Island Energy reported Monday, and by Tuesday morning, power had been restored to more than half.
