Rhode Island Governor Signs Law Expanding Access To Justice For Child Sex Abuse Victims

The new law amends the statute of limitations for claims of sexual abuse of a child.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Gov. Dan McKee signed into law a bill that expands access to justice for child sex abuse victims.

The new legislation amends the statute of limitations for claims of sexual abuse of a child and creates a two-year window for victims to bring otherwise time-barred claims against institutions and supervisors accused of enabling or covering up sexual abuse.

“As a governor, a father, and grandfather, my heart is heavy thinking of the tragedies these survivors and their families have endured," McKee said in a media release.

"This legislation will help deliver justice that so many are owed,” McKee said.

The new law takes effect July 1.
