Barrington Resident to Become Principal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Bristol

Maloney comes to OLMC from the Highlander Charter School in South Providence, where she has served as a K-3 resource teacher since 2011. With more than a decade of teaching experience, she is a member of the school board at St. Luke’s School in Barrington and has participated on the school’s curriculum advisory committee.

The appointment of Maloney concludes a search initiated earlier this spring when Sister Carmela Santarsiero, OLMC’s principal since 2007, announced her retirement. Maloney, who will assume her new responsibilities on July 1, 2014, says she looks forward to working with students, parents and teachers in a community that encourages students to embrace God’s love for them.

“Ultimately, it is important to develop students’ minds to hear God’s voice, to perceive the world’s needs and to detect their own calling,” she says. “I have been fortunate to understand that my vocation and ministry is to contribute to the spiritual and educational development of students within the context of a Catholic community, and I very much look forward to this opportunity.”

Father Zinno says that as a product of Catholic education at the elementary, secondary and collegiate levels, Maloney brings not only the academic and administrative skills required to lead the school, but the Christian values that make the OLMC community such a nurturing educational and spiritual environment.

“Janet Maloney’s wonderful combination of a devout Catholic faith, personal and family commitment to Catholic education, her education abilities and training, and her business background all showed to me that she was the best candidate of the nearly 20 who applied,” Father Zinno says. “Indeed, within five minutes of our interview, I knew that she was the one I wanted as principal for our school. The selection committee had the same experience in their interview process. She has a warm personality, a wonderful disposition, and a ready and willing attitude to taking on this leadership role. I am so happy that Janet Maloney will be our new principal!”

As a K-3 resource teacher at Highlander Charter School since 2011, Maloney has supported students on Individualized Education Plans in achieving academic goals and objectives. Previously, she taught at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, working from 2005 to 2011 with students diagnosed with language-based disabilities and attention disorders, as an upper school resource teacher. In June 2010, she earned the school’s Gladys Trudeau Fischer Teacher of the Year award.

Maloney holds a bachelor’s degree in accountancy and a master of business administration from Providence College. In 2004, she completed the elementary/special education program at Providence College; she holds professional teaching certifications in both areas.
