Last-Minute Father's Day Gifts

Take a drive over to Center ACE Hardware on County Road in Barrington and find just about anything to make dad happy on Father's Day.

So, your father or husband already has an iPad, a Kindle, a recliner in the TV room and plenty of ties in the closet he never wears.

But you and your children must buy him something for Father’s Day on Sunday. And you’re running out of time.

Take a drive over to on County Road in Barrington and talk to owner George Tamer. He has plenty of ideas.

“I can’t keep a hammock in the store,” Tamer said Thursday afternoon. “I’ve got one left, but I’m getting more on Monday. It's been a big seller."

A card from or across the street with an IOU tucked inside could solve that problem. But you really want to hand him something on Sunday to make his day. Right?

Patio, deck and beach chairs have been selling, Tamer said. He has a display of resin Adirondack chairs outside the store that range in price from $29.99 to almost $400. The colors will brighten any environment.

Does your favorite man like to cook outside on a grill? Tamer has a wide array of grills in all shapes, sizes, and prices – up to around $850 -- and the BBQ tongs and utensils he can use to flip burgers or turn steaks and seafood fillets.

Of course, you really can’t go wrong with tools. Especially hand tools.

But don’t just buy a wrench or a screwdriver. Most do-it-yourselfers prefer a set of wrenches or screwdrivers to make them happy, said Tamer. You never know what you'll need a size you don't have.

Center Hardware stocks plenty of garden tools, as well -- and the cloth and leather gloves to protect your man’s hands, too.

Flashlights and Swiss Army knives make great gifts for children to give to their fathers, he said. The all-purpose knives, for instance, range in price from under $10 to $33. They won’t break many budgets.

“Want to make your own soda water or seltzer?” Tamer asks, pointing to a metal shelf near the cash register.

On the shelf sits a display of soda-water makers, which most dads use to make their own seltzer, Tamer said.

But like I said, you might just want to ask Tamer for some advice. He has plenty of ideas for last-minute gifts for Father’s Day.
