Learn to Crochet With 'Plarn'

Turn those plastic bags into reusable crocheted items on Sunday in the Barrington library.

Do something useful with those piles of plastic garbage bags under your sink or stuffed in a separate bag in a closet. Crochet those bags.

Stacie Parillo, considered a crochet maven, will teach you how to turn those plastic bags into “fabulous crocheted items,” said Amy Greer, community services librarian.

Come to the Barrington library on Sunday afternoon at 2 and learn all about using this plastic yarn, Greer said.

Plastic crochet is considered durable, waterproof, and machine washable. There are millions of uses for using “plarn,” including reusable tote bags, beach bags, welcome mats for muddy shoes, and rugs.

The workshop will run for two hours. You’ll make a tote bag before you leave.

You should know basic crochet stitches, including the chain stitch, single crochet and half-double crochet, Greer said.

Bring 20-30 grocery bags or other plastic bags – the crinklier the better; a crochet hooks size K-P; scissors or a rotary cutter and mat. Register by calling 247-1920 or email greer at agreer@barringtonlibrary.org.
