Ship of Fools Cardboard Boat Regatta

It’s time to set sail for a great cause in the most exciting community event of the summer: the First Annual Ship of Fools Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday August 23, 2014 at noon. Proceeds from this all-ages event, organized by the Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center (FBSCC), will support improvements to the Bay Spring Community Center (BSCC) and make possible additional arts, cultural, and educational programs for East Bay residents.

The Ship of Fools Regatta combines family fun, boating safety, community involvement, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, and environmental awareness. Participants and spectators will enjoy a taste of the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup without the multi-million dollar budgets and with a lot more humor right on Bullocks Cove at the intersection of Bay Spring Avenue and Edwin Street in Barrington, RI.

There are many ways for individuals, teams, and business to participate in the Regatta:

  • Register to race, assemble your crew, and start building your vessel
  • Become a business sponsor (multiple levels available)
  • Provide free or discounted materials (cardboard, paint, tape, glue, etc.) to race participants, and let FBSCC thank you by promoting your business
  • Volunteer for this memorable marine event.
Teams and sponsors can register at www.bsccri.org/regatta and create their own corrugated cardboard marine marvels. Choose a crew of up to 5 people (those with a sense of humor and skill with adhesives are recommended) to build and race the boat around a designated course.

The teams are classed as follows:
  • Youth / Under 13
  • Adult
  • Corporate
  • Pro / Boatbuilder
Awards will be given in all classes. The Regatta will then wrap up with a sponsored cookout at the Bay Spring Community Center for racers, volunteers, and sponsors.

Complete event information, including online registration, rules, and construction guidelines can be found at www.bsccri.org/regatta or email bayspringcommunity@gmail.com with any questions.
