BARRINGTON, RI — Mystic Aquarium workers were forced to euthanize a stranded dolphin on Wednesday. After being examined by the aquarium's animal rescue team, the male bottlenose dolphin was determined to be too sick to survive.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, environmental police were called to Barrington around 9:30 a.m. following reports of a stranded dolphin. Mystic Aquarium's Animal Rescue Team was called in to handle the rescue, and Dr. Jen Flower performed a physical examination and a blood test on-site.

According to Mystic Aquarium, the animal was suffering from weakening vital signs and severe respiratory distress, causing the team to make the "unfortunate decision" to euthanize the dolphin.
