Two First-Ever Fun Events in Barrington

Beach Slam! on Narragansett Bay at Tillinghast Farm is Saturday; Banned Books and Potluck Supper takes place Sunday at Barrington library.

Two first-ever events take place in Barrington this weekend. And the events seem like an awful lot of fun, indeed. Take a look for yourself.

On Saturday, the first-ever Beach Slam! sponsored by Save the Bay is taking place at Tillinghast Farm off Nayatt Road right by the side of Narragansett Bay.

The community event runs from 10 am to 2 pm. And you can’t beat the price. Admission is free.

There will be kayaking and paddle boarding by Eestern Mountain Sports, a rock wall, fly fishing by L.L. Bean, a rowing demonstration by the Barrington-based East Bay Rowing Club, crafts, field games, a bounce house, a raffle, plenty of food and live music.

Musicians include Sam Lardner, an environmental advocate who has produced Oceans are Talking, a call to action for children about critical issues facing the world’s oceans.

Ipso Facto, the Moses Brown School’s a cappella group, will perform as well. And a Burundian drumming group will get your toes tapping for sure.

Perhaps an even more intriguing event – at least for your mind -- is the Banned Books and Potluck Supper at the Barrington library. It starts on Sunday at 5 pm.

Some of the world’s most beloved and best-read books have been banned by somebody, somewhere, for some reason or other. Even Harry Potter!

On Sunday, the library will celebrate these special books with readings, music, raffles and the potluck meal.

The event is free and open to everyone. Bring a dish to share with others.
