View Barrington's Past in Your Hand

View most of the historic collection of the Town Museum operated by the Barrington Preservation Society just about anywhere with your iPad or Kindle or cell phone.

Most of the society's 2,000-piece collection is now on the BPS website, said Carole Villucci, museum curator. The museum uses the PastPerfect collection-management system to handle its collection online.

"Just go to the website home page and click on the graphic of the lighthouse on the right," said Villucci.

Within seconds, you'll see random images and a menu bar that allows you to search for whatever you want, she said.

The museum's collection of objects, photos and books was put online by Linda Blade, a consultant working for the museum over the past two years. Her work isn't done yet, but it's getting close.

Villucci paid for the work with three grants from the Rhode Island Foundation and some private fundraising. It's cost about $12,000 so far, she said.

The work has involved digging into an array of disparate boxes to separate each object and photo and publication for a new photo. Blade then puts each photo into the collection-management system.

"We photograph things as they come in now," Villucci said.
