Naked Girls at the Statehouse! Go 'NUTS' on Saturday!

The mentoring program at the middle school has helped more than 30 students this year alone to grow in their self-confidence.

Actually not naked; more like half-dressed. But hopefully I got your attention. Yesterday I walked into my office at 240 High St. to find the actresses who are part of the play, "NUTS!," in the middle of a costume change. They were rehearsing for the 2nd Story Theatre presentation that will be at the Statehouse for the month of June.

This blog is about the JUNE 4 benefit performance for Mosaico and its programs. Mosaico is hosting a fun, themed pre-reception at 7 pm, with the actual performance at 8 pm, on June 4.  Like last year, the 2nd Story Theatre has generously offered to give the proceeds from the June 4 performance to Mosaico.

This year, more than ever, Mosaico needs your help. Our usual funding sources are disappearing. Our donors are, themselves, feeling the pinch of the economy. We know that our programs are helping the community.

For the past two years, we have helped more than 200 people with their resumes and job hunting, placing several in sustainable positions with local businesses. We’ve provided funds for the neediest in our community to go to school to learn a marketable trade. Our mentoring and YES! programs at the middle and high schools have had a positive impact on reducing the drop-out rate in our schools.

We all know the importance of finishing high school. At the high school this year, the YES! program had a 97 percent retention rate.  The mentoring program at the middle school has helped more than 30 students this year alone to grow in their self-confidence, provided them with a place and a person to go to as they make their way through that so turbulent pre-adolescent time, fraught with many temptations and challenges.

Often in middle school, students of that age are making choices that will have a long-lasting impact on their lives. Having a mentor that they can talk to helps these at-risk students to empower themselves to make healthy choices.  These are the programs that are at most risk this year unless we can raise the funds to keep them going.

By coming to this special performance, you will be supporting Mosaico’s valuable programs, as well getting a fun night out. So gather your friends, bring a date or come alone! See a great play, have a glass of wine and enjoy some theme-related refreshments at our pre-reception.

We all know 2nd Story Theatre’s reputation for presenting outstanding plays.  Here at Mosaico we are especially grateful for their generous support. This play, about a young woman’s fight with her family as they try to have her committed to Bellevue Hospital, is no exception.  Is she really NUTS!?

Find out this Saturday, June 4, 7 pm, at the Statehouse, 240 High St., Bristol. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the door or by calling Mosaico at 401-253-4627.
