ASFMS 8th Grade Career Fair

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Last week, the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School students participated in  a "Career Fair".  This was no ordinary career fair however....  The students were challenged to budget their "salaries".  Each student chose their career based on their interests, they researched their choices, ie:  Colleges, Student loans, yearly salary expectations.  Would they buy a car or take public transportation??  Would they rent or own??

Students were given a monthly amount and asked to budget it!  Payment "centers" were set up around the library and each child was required to write checks and balance their own checkbooks!  They paid their rent/mortgage, utilities, car payment, food, cable, cell phone bills, loans...... They even had an entertainment budget!  Oh... and of course, the TAX MAN was there to collect!   Didn't budget well??  There was even a station to apply for a part time job...... Quite a few students needed one!!  Life isn't always predictable.... so there was even a "grab bag" of possible unexpected expenses.... car or appliance repairs.

I was extremely impressed with how this was run and how much the children enjoyed it!!  At the end of the day, my daughter came up to me and said "Sorry Mum.... I had no idea bills were this much... I never want to grow up!"
