Notes From The Campaign Trail

It is almost election time yet again, and I am sure most of you reading this are glad it is coming to an end. From the commercials and debates, to the endless political signs displayed everywhere you turn, it is a constant reminder that the political season is in full gear. My time campaigning has been extremely eye opening, as I have learned a great deal about many concerns that I had never previously considered. 

When I set out on my quest to become the next State Representative in District 29, I was focused solely on the big picture items like our economy, tax structure, budget deficits and entitlement programs.  Over the course of the last six months, these concerns have been echoed time and time again. What I did not expect to hear about, were the vast number of other issues expressed by our residents. I have heard it all; from concerns expressed over sidewalks, garbage disposal, snow removal, and post office drop boxes to health hazards regarding sand deposits emanating from the dunes near the Hopkins Hill Elementary School.

While some politicians would just shake their heads and tell you what you want to hear, I actually acted on these concerns. In fact, I addressed every single concern and responded to individuals personally. Some of the issues required that I simply forward information to would be decision-making parties, while other times I was required to do research, make phone calls, and in some cases, set up meetings. Either way, I did what was required of me to fulfill my promise.

When it comes to our quality of life, there is no concern too big or small, and there are no health hazards to minimal or too grave. This is our state and our future. These are our homes, our schools, and our hard earned paychecks. Our citizens deserve to have someone in office that will go the extra mile to make their lives just a little bit easier.

Having said that, I am still very much focused on the big-ticket issues facing Rhode Island, including our lackluster economy, over taxed citizenry, and over generous entitlements. It's time for Rhode Island to start working for our small businessmen and women. It's time for our leaders to face the hard facts about our deficits and over spending rather than just raising taxes annually to meet short-term projections. And it's time we empower individuals to stand on their own two feet in order to more appropriately redirect our limited funds to individuals who most need the help; including our elderly, developmentally disabled and brave veterans returning home.

I am not a politician. I am a hard working husband, father and taxpayer. I let my actions do the speaking for me. I earn my paycheck the hard way despite being eligible for disability as a result of being a quadriplegic, confined to a wheelchair, after being hit by a drunk driver ten years ago. In my mind, I am fully capable of working, and would rather see my tax dollars go to the aforementioned individuals in need.

Despite having bold ideas and solutions, I will not promise you that I will solve all of our state's issues. However, I can promise you that I will give everything I have to addressing your concerns, and making Rhode Island the greatest state in the nation.
