If you consider writing to be an art form, then you would have to agree that blogging is one way of using words to share that art. Bloggers are artistic in the sense that they carefully choose words that best describe their feelings, sentiments, wishes, desires, wants, needs and opinions.

Since its inception in the mid-1990s, blogging — or web-logging, as it was originally referred to — gradually saturated the global online community, making the Internet a more viable and valuable source of information. With blogging becoming mainstream, personal journaling evolved into a common vehicle for people wanting to share their knowledge, experiences, hobbies or point of view on a never-ending range of topics with a potential worldwide audience.

The Internet-based business explosion of the past several years has brought blogging far beyond its original purpose. Savvy small business owners view blogs as a way to boost their productivity online. A well-conceived and -managed business blog can be used in many ways, including the delivery of detailed information about a business, giving visitors access to detailed product specifications, providing real-time product demonstrations using video, and more.

A business blog is an effective way to inform, interact with, and learn from your prospective and existing customers. With the easy integration of Facebook and Twitter, blogs can be an amazing social media tool. Blogs also give the small business owner access to an almost never-ending list of software products called plugins. These plugins can create functionality, such as surveys, polls, contact forms, optin list building, photo galleries, traffic reports, etc. Bottom line with plugins is, if there is a particular functionality you are wanting your blog to perform, there is probably a plugin that will make it happen for you.

One of the most important but often overlooked benefits of a well-managed blog for a small business is that the search engines, especially Google, absolutely love them. This fact alone can give a local small business an advantage over their larger competitors. I will talk more about why that is and how we help make that happen in a future post.
