Council Members Honor WWII Bombardier, Former Council President

Military Service Proclamation

To a standing ovation, Captain Edouard J. Jacques, former Town Council president and ex-World War II bomber pilot was recognized for his professionalism and exceptional service to the town. Jacques was awarded the Rhode Island Star on Feb. 6 at the National Guard Headquarters in Cranston for his exceptional military service in WWII. The award is given to those in military service of the State or Federal Government who distinguish themselves by exception meritorious service. 

Captain Jacques is also the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service as a lead bombardier flying 30 missions over Germany during World War II. Captain Jacques' war time experiences is the subject of the upcoming book, Shadow Heroes, written by Judge Arthur G. Capaldi.

CPD Phone Line

Council members approved a contract with Rhode Island Telephone, Inc., which will enable the Coventry Police Department to replace the outdated hard-line phone system currently in use.

Business License

The application for a victualling license by George Melanis, owner of Nowhere Creamery, 2246 Flat River Road, (previously DeCiantis Ice Cream) was unanimously approved by the Council. 

Blizzard 2013 Praise

Council President Gary Cote praised the Town for its response to the blizzard that occurred over Feb. 8-9. "I traveled all over the state and Coventry by far was in better shape after the storm than any other municipality," he stated. "The town employees and DPW did a phenomenal job in cleaning and clearing our roads."
