Do Your Part To Keep Sidewalks And Hydrants Clear

A seemingly forgotten town ordinance calls for residents to clear snow from neighboring sidewalks AND fire hydrants after a snowfall.

Coventry residents are hoping they do not witness any more significant snowfall for a while following the several feet the region received between Dec. 26 and last week.

However, even if new snow does not occur in the near future, the roadside piles that are left over will be present for weeks to come and in some local neighborhoods, this fact is posing a threat. Despite the efforts of Coventry's multiple fire districts, some fire hydrants have not been completely cleared of snow. This fact could cause nearby homes to suffer greatly in the event of a fire, by making it difficult for emergency officials to find and access hydrants.

In Chapter 209-7 of Coventry's ordinance (Streets and Sidewalks), Removal of snow required; restrictions on deposit of snow, Section A states: All owners, occupants or persons having care of any building or lot bordering on any street, highway or public place within the Town shall, within the first four hours of daylight after the end of any snowfall or the fall or deposit of snow on the sidewalk of the building or lot from any cause whatsoever, remove or cause to be removed all snow from around any fire hydrant, police and fire box or alarms, and any other emergency call box or alarm, on the sidewalk in front of the building or lot.
