Emaciated Dog Euthanized, Coventry Man Charged With Animal Cruelty: Cops

Four malnourished puppies were saved, police said.

COVENTRY, RI — A Coventry man was charged with animal cruelty after officers an emaciated dog that was ultimately euthanized turned up at the pound, police said.

Michael Beausoleil, 62, was arraigned in Kent County District Court Wednesday where he was formally charged with felony unnecessary cruelty to animals resulting in death misdemeanor unnecessary cruelty to animals, the Coventry Police Department said in a media release.

"Coventry Animal Control initiated an animal cruelty investigation after a dog in severe distress was brought to the pound," the release said.

The dog, described as a small, tan, female adult mixed breed, was visibly emaciated, with her hips, ribs, and spinal column clearly visible through the skin," the release said. "The dog was also lethargic, unable to lift her head, stand, or walk, and was bleeding from the hind end."

The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic for emergency treatment, according to the release.

"Despite medical intervention, veterinary staff determined that the adult dog's condition was the result of prolonged and severe neglect," the release said. "Sadly, due t o the extent of her suffering, the humane decisionwas made to euthanize the dog."

Officers learned there were several puppies at the residence where the emaciated dog had been kept, according to the release.

Police and animal control officers contacted the homeowner, Beausoleil, who "confirmed ownership of the emaciated adult dog and advised that four puppies were also present in the home," the release said.

Animal control officers took the puppies to the veterinary clinic for evaluation, according to the release.

"The four puppies were also found to be malnourished and dehydrated; however, they were in a position to receive treatment and ultimately survived," the release said.

Following his arraignment, Beausoleil was released on his own recognizance but ordered not to keep any more dogs, according to the release, which said the four puppies have since been adopted.

"This case is a heartbreaking reminder of why the work of our Animal Control Officers and Police Officers is so critical," Coventry Police Chief Benjamin Witt said in the release.

"Sadly, senseless acts of cruelty against animals appear to be occurring more frequently in our community," Witt said. "This behavior is unacceptable and entirely avoidable. We will continue to work closely with Animal Control to investigate these cases thoroughly and hold individuals accountable when animals are subjected to neglect or abuse."
