Don't discard those Hardy Mums. With a little preparation you can plant them in the spring and they will bloom again. Cut mum stems back a little bit, leave them in the pot (it's to cold to plant them now) you can dig a deep hole and place the pot in the ground . Cover them back up with soil and place thick bed of leaves over them. You can put them in your shed or garage and cover with blanket. I've had them come back even by putting under tarp in the compost. In the spring take them out and re pot them or plant in the ground.. My motto is why buy plants every year when they will grow again.
