Keep Fighting!!

Sorry that it’s been two weeks since a post, but things have been busy.

Two weeks ago the Oakers beat Tollgate in a convincing fashion, 29 to 8.  The first half started off very shaky, ending in a 0-0 tie.  However, the Oakers came back after halftime with a fresh fire in their eyes and dominated the rest of the game.  It was great to see their enthusiasm.

This past Friday the Oakers hosted the Hurricanes of Warwick-Vets.  Unfortunately our guys ended up on the losing end of a 27-28 game.  However, we have a lot to be proud of, and I’m still hoarse two days later from cheering from them.

The thing that makes me most proud about this game is that our guys never seemed to give up.  This is in stark contrast to the first game of the season.  There were at least 5 or 6 plays that, if the “ball had bounced the other way,” the Oakers would have won.  There were some missed extra points and a missed field goal.  There was also a busted extra point play that miraculously turned into a 2-point conversion for the Hurricanes.

It would have been easy for our guys to get discouraged, but they kept fighting to the end of the game.  Sure there were some mistakes, but they’re high school players, not NFL.  With more practice as the season progresses, they will get better.  Like I said, the best thing is that they kept fighting to the very end.  The fact they we could even attempt a field goal is a great indication that we have a team to be reckoned with in the division.  If you haven’t been to a game yet, you should come just to see the kicker.  He’s doing a great job.

As I see it, the moral of this is that the guys have really come a long way since game 1.  This week will be a big test of their will and character.  This Friday they play Johnston, who is doing very well this year.  Our Oakers could take a dark path, dwell on the negatives, and become discouraged.  On the other hand, they could learn from their mistakes last week and keep the fire that seems to have ignited in them over the last 2 weeks.  I hope this is the path that they choose.  They are still a very talented team and a great group of guys.  Keep up the good work and give it everything you have.
