Rep. Nunes Bill Melds State Tax Levy Rules to Coventry Fire Districts

Nunes says the bill would put city and town fire districts on the "same page".

With a desire for an even playing field in the midst of a turbulent economy, Rep. Jared R. Nunes (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick) has introduced a bill that would make tax increases in any of Coventry’s four fire districts subject to the state’s maximum levy laws after a gradual six-year phase-in.

“We all need to be on the same page here,” Representative Nunes said. “With the state of our communities being so fragile, it only makes sense for Coventry’s fire districts to adhere to the same tax laws that a majority of cities and towns in the state are already following. This measure will ensure a level of fairness and uniformity to the taxpayers in my community.”

Bill co-sponsor Rep. Lisa P. Tomasso (D-Dist. 29, Coventry, West Greenwich) added, “This legislation would be a tool to assist the fire districts in long-range budgetary planning. In addition, the bill provides stability and smoothing of the fire district levy, thereby relieving property owners of unaffordable and intermittent rate spikes.”

There are currently 44 fire districts existing among 15 of the state’s 39 cities and towns. Four of those districts are in Coventry.
