Our Coventry Oakers opened league play last night against the Chargers in Chariho. What a difference one week can make. The final score was 28 to 0 in favor of our Oakers. The Junior Varsity followed the Varisty's lead Saturday morning with a 37 to 0 beat-down of the Chariho JV.
The offense returned to their winning ways and living up to much more of their potential. The line did a much better job holding their blocks and the running backs used their speed and strength to make some great plays. The QB also did a great job with his passing targets. Overall they played a fundamentally solid game.
The defense was amazing, especially compared to last week. To go from giving up 43 points to delivering a shutout in one week was a very pleasant surprise. The guys made solid tackles and played their positions very well. I’m not sure what Coach Z did last week in practice, but keep it up!!

I was proud to see our guys step it up this week. Chariho is a historically strong school and we don’t have many wins against them. So our Oakers showed a lot of determination in coming out and playing hard. After the first quarter there wasn’t much doubt about the outcome of the game. I hope this signifies a positive change in their team psyche, given what I wrote last week. The real test will come if they have another game where they fall behind. Will they respond by taking a deep breath, coming together as a team, and fighting for the win? Based on the way they played Chariho, they have the talent to do just that. They are a great team and I love cheering for them. If you’re at their game, I’m sure you’ll hear me.
