New Felony Charge Added In Connection With Crash That Sent Family Of 5 To Hospital: Cops

One of the five suffered a serious facial laceration, police said.

CRANSTON, RI — An additional felony charge was tacked on in connection with the Aug. 1 crash on Route 37 that sent a family of five to the hospital, police said.

In the aftermath of the 4 a.m. crash, Enrique Alvarado, 29, was charged with driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury and refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Following the ensuing investigation, a charge of driving to endanger, resulting in serious personal injury was added, the Cranston Police Department said in a media release.

Alvarado, a resident of Providence, was also charged with speeding and conditions requiring reduced speed, according to the release.

Alvarado was driving as fast as 113 mph, the release said.

Alvarado was behind the wheel of a 2013 BMW when he crashed into the back of a 2021 Ram Pickup near London Avenue, according to police.

Alvarado was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, police said.

"Upon his arrival, hospital staff obtained a blood sample for medical treatment purposes," according to police.

The family of five riding in the pickup also was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, police said.

One of the family members "suffered a serious facial laceration extending from above the right eyebrow to the bridge of the nose that required surgical repair," according to police.

The other four escaped the ordeal with minor injuries, police said."

Witnesses reported that Alvarado attempted to leave the scene of the crash on foot but was "stopped by the driver of the Ram until first responders arrived," according to police.
