Boys Basketball: Falcons Fall to Northmen

North Smithfield was able to get quality looks from the perimeter and shot at a high percentage, tallying 43 first half points and 70 in the contest.

Cranston West and North Smithfield squared off on Wednesday evening, competing in the Coventry Credit Union Classic tournament, a non-league event. The Northmen offense was too potent for the Falcons to contend with and they fell 70-55.

The Falcons came out of the gate strong, working the ball inside and creating turnovers on the defensive end. They controlled all facets of the game in the first five minutes, except the scoreboard. The Northmen were forced into some difficult shots in their early possessions, which unfortunately for Cranston West, they were knocking down. Despite the high energy and play from the Falcons, they trailed by one after the first five minutes at 11-10.

After a timeout, the Northmen made a concerted effort to work the ball inside on the offensive end, which created opportunities for their shooters on the perimeter. And the Northmen caught fire from the outside, hitting seven 3-pointers in the first half, including four consecutive three point hits from four different players. Captain Matthew Walkow led the Northmen in first half scoring with 13, as North Smithfield outscored Cranston West 32-11 after the early timeout.

The Falcons started the second half on a six-point run, but the Northmen responded with back to back threes, spoiling any ideas of a second half comeback. The Northmen cruised to a 70-55 victory. Walkow finished up with 24 points propelling his squad to their fourth overall win.

The Falcons fall to 2-5 on the season and continue struggling with their offense, reaching the fifty point mark for only the second time this season.

"We've just gotta do a better job offensively. We're so offensively challenged right now, we're struggling to get fifty points," Cranston West Coach James Moretti said.
