Boy's Soccer: Falcons Lose Big at Mount Pleasant 5-0

The Falcons were stymied by Mount Pleasant's slick passing and got shut out, 5-0.

Mount Pleasant took advantage of the Cranston West boys soccer team's miscues on Monday, scoring five times as they hung up a crooked number on the Falcons, defeating them 5-0.

The Falcons were poised to start off the game and had a couple of looks at the goal. They had just one stellar opportunity, which was whiffed on by Falcon Sophomore Austin Raposa. All other shots were turned away by Kilties goalkeeper Julio Rosales on his way to the shutout.

The Kilties responded ten minutes in and started to take control of the match. They made a few wide shots and had a close call with Falcon goalkeeper Jonas Sullivan in the box on an attempted clearing kick.

Mount Pleasant broke through on a Cranston West turnover in the midfield and the captains worked together. Edwin Jorge found Kelvin Morales ahead of the pack and the Kilties jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons put a good shot attempt on goal off a corner kick a couple minutes later but another good save was made by Julio Rosales.

The game was played up and down the field for about ten minutes after the Rosales save, with both teams creating pressure. But Edwin Jorge continued to put his stamp on the game and found the back of the net on a great individual play, and put the Kilties up 2-0. Mount Pleasant controlled play for the rest of the half and Mount Pleasant led 2-0 at half.

The Falcons came out with a renewed spirit to start the seond half and created some scoring chances, all of which were stopped by Julio Rosales, including a sprawling save which seemed to discourage the Falcons.

After the remarkable save from Rosales, the Kilties scored their third goal and continued to dominate the remainder on the contest. Kelvin Morales found Jarin Rosales for the goal and added one of his own, his second of the game, a few minutes later. Maodo Lo rounded out the scoring and Mount Pleasant beat Cranston West 5-0.

Mount Pleasant capitalized well on Falcon turnovers and passed well off of those turnovers to get good opportunities and score goals.

"The passing was a lot better than it has been. The passing and the aggressiveness were good. And they were playing as a team and not as heroes," Kilties Coach Jim Peters commented after the game.

For Cranston West, it was frustrating game with many mistakes. The technical errors gave the Kilties many more opportunities than the Falcons could muster up.

"We made a lot of technical errors, a lot of unforced errors, which caused them [Mount Pleasant] to win the ball in the middle and counterattack," Cranston West Coach James Williamson said.

Williamson said that his team needs to focus on the fundamentals going into the next game and do a better job protecting the ball and communicating.

Cranston West will look for its first win of the season tonight, Sept. 21, against Woonsocket.
