Boys Volleyball: Falcons Handle Hurricanes

Cranston West boys volleyball team remains undefeated on the young season.

It was a battle for first place between two undefeated teams. Despite a sweep, the match was intense and highly competitive.

Warwick Vets traveled to Cranston West on Tuesday night in a boys volleyball match with both teams possessing a 2-0 record. The Falcons trailed for most of the first two games, but won them both and prevailed in the third game as well.

Early in the first game, the Hurricanes held leads of 4-1 and 5-2. The Falcons fought back tying the game at 7. West took the first lead of the match at 10-9.

It was a back and forth contest all night long with several long rallies. Vets claimed a slight edge towards the end of the game, leading 21-19. However, the Falcons mustered a comeback and won the game 25-23.

In the second game, the Falcons held an early 6-5 lead. However, the Hurricanes fought back and put themselves in good position to win the game. An 11-4 run, including two different stretches of four consecutive points, put them in control of the game leading 16-9.

The Falcons would not go down without a fight and scored eight consecutive points. They went on to win the second game 25-20, with a block securing the win.

West dominated the early portions of game number three, as they held leads of 6-0, 7-2, 11-3, and 14-5. Their lead slowly dwindled away as Vets got to within 24-19. It was the closest they would get as an unforced error, a double touch, gave the game and match to the Falcons.

The Hurricanes mental mistakes and unforced errors cost them the match. "Our errors put us in a hole and made it almost impossible to dig out of it," Jean McGarry, Hurricanes head coach said.

"We did very well blocking and played well at the net," she added.

Senior Nick Russo led the Falcons with 8 kills and junior Eric Borrelli notched seven. Ridge Porter had 12 assists and 10 digs and Steven Ruhle led the team with 15 digs.

Roger Tow, Falcons head boss, commented on two players he felt made a difference in the match. "The star of the game would be Ridge Porter for his defense and set decisions," he said, "Steve Albro played a really good game for us and his presence was felt."

"We are trying to run a quicker offense," the coach added. "I give Warwick Vets credit, they were scrappy," Tow said.
