Bristol PD Searching For New Chief
Former Chief Josue Canario announced he would be stepping down after 11 years in March.

BRISTOL, RI — The Bristol Police Department has launched its search for a new police chief. The former chief, Josue Canario, announced his retirement after 11 years as colonel in March. Applications will be accepted until May 17.
According to WJAR, Canario submitted a letter to town officials in March saying he would be going on voluntary medical leave, effective immediately, and would officially retire in May. Canario is a 33-year veteran of the force and ha served as chief for the past 11 years. Retired Portsmouth Deputy Chief Brian Peters was named interim chief.
The job includes the following requirements:

- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field
- Required ten years' experience in the field, with at least five in a rank above patrolman.
If the requirements are met, all applicants must also pass written, psychological and physical exams as well as pass a drug test and an extensive background check.
Applicants will be scored based off of a point system, with 60 points possible for the written test and 30 points possible from the interview. One point will also be added for each year of experience in jobs, up to 10 points. The Town Administrator will make the final decision from the three highest-scoring candidates.

Applications will be accepted until May 17 at 4 p.m. and can be submitted in person or by mail to 10 Court Street or by email. More information about the application process and requirements is available on the town's website.
